Blog Series: Smarter Fitness, Real Life Edition – Entry 1

I’ve been lifting consistently for a while now and following DLB Daily (which I love), but I’ve learned the hard way that training alone doesn’t carry the load. Nutrition matters—a lot. I’ve studied bodybuilding for years and even competed once, but looking back, I did it all wrong: low calories, no real understanding of macros, and completely blind to what my body actually needed. I looked lean, but I felt like hell.

Now, at 40, I’m trying to do things differently. Smarter. Sustainably. And with fewer extremes.

Where This All Started

I’ve been deep in fitness content since 2008—forums, magazines, YouTube, social media, you name it. I even competed in a bikini show in 2010, powered by nothing but raw grit and the wrong approach. Since then, I’ve rebounded more times than I’d like to admit.

Do I want to compete again? Maybe. But only if I can do it right—physically, mentally, and hormonally. What I really want is to feel strong and have a healthy, capable body I can count on.

Postpartum (my son was born in 2023) and possibly in perimenopause, my body is simply different. My metabolism, energy, and recovery are nothing like they used to be. Add in some potential thyroid issues, and this isn’t just about hitting the gym—it’s about managing my whole system.

Why I’m Using AI

This time, I’m letting AI take some of the mental load off my plate. I gave it the basics:

• 5’3”, 190 lbs (not happy with this AT ALL)

• Lifting 5–6 days a week (DLB Daily)

• Carb cycling: high carb on leg days

• Focus: Balance, fiber, and performance—not restriction

AI via ChatGPT gave me a rough calorie and macro plan based on my workouts and goals. Once I tell it what I’ve eaten, it automatically logs and totals my intake—calories, protein, carbs, fats, and fiber—so I don’t have to do the math or pull up an app.

This Is My Real Life

I work from home and sit most of the day. Movement comes from wrangling greyhounds and chasing after my toddler. And by chasing, I mean today included a blown-out diaper and a naptime bed mess—all in one afternoon.

My energy is inconsistent, and my schedule is unpredictable. I don’t have hours to meal prep, log every gram, or follow a rigid plan. I need quick, flexible meals made from what’s already in the fridge—chicken, beef, shrimp, eggs, pasta, rice, and protein powder. ChatGPT helps make that happen.

What I Don’t Do Anymore

I don’t:

• Weigh every bite

• Use a food tracker app

• Obsess over numbers

• Restrict to extremes

I do use AI to:

• Build meal plans based on my schedule and training intensity

• Hit protein and fiber goals

• Track and adjust macros without extra stress

• Keep it simple and consistent

What’s Next

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about making progress that works with my life—not against it.

Every two weeks, I’ll share how things are going—what’s working, what’s not, what I’m eating, and how I’m training. I’ll include meal examples, adjustments, and the ups and downs that come with juggling all of this as a working mom in a changing body.
